Saana Volanen: Katsoessa katoaa / Vanishing while viewing

The light that once was here is here again but so different that one could not say it is the same.

The light that once was here is here again but so different that one could not say it is the same.

The landscape surrounding the artwork has been captured with camera, then deconstructed and returned to the landscape as light. The artwork is light from the past intertwined into the present moment, day turning into night and the constant change of landscape.

Vanishing while viewing is a site specific light art piece which is made with LED strips that are composed into a site’s landscape. The LED strips are showing material that has been filmed of the same landscape – in the pixels of the LED strips the video’s visual information dilutes and what comes more apparent is how the landscape and light changes constantly. Within a fifteen minute loop the sun sets and man-made lights are turned on. When spectating the piece from afar one can detect the shapes of the landscape and when one is more near the flickering of the individual pixels is revealed.

Vanishing while viewing can be relocated into new locations. It is a site-specific piece so its form and composition is redesigned to be in relation to each location’s specific landscape and the video input is filmed in that location.
