Janne Parviainen: UV-drawing installation

A site-specific UV-drawing installation on a window consisting of a vast amount of figures creating a larger composition.

In this UV-drawing installations I am interested in expressing different emotions through the dozens/hundreds of individual characters that as a whole combine a tapestry of rhythm and colour. My previous work in Porvoo, titled Liberation, was an abstracted version of Michelangelo's altar fresco in the Sistine Chapel, in which I took away all the religious elements of the original and displayed only the characters in their positions in an abstract form. In this way, the whole composition of the Michelangelo art could be seen as a play of rhythm, working only with tension between empty and full, liberated from its original narrative.

The installation can be seen from both outside and inside the building if necessary. The work can be planned specifically based on the theme of the event/exhibition and/or in a relationship with the building it is exhibited in.

Which kind of light sources and what other materials and equipment are used?
UV- lights to cover the entire drawing area, fluorescent markers, basket crane (or any kind of lift if necessary).

Please provide the dimensions of the work. Approximate size will do. Please mention if the work can be adjusted. (width-height-depth):
The work is site-specific and can be made from 1,5 m x 1,5 m to as large as 25 m x 8 m.

Electricity consumption:
Standard mains current (10A/16A).

Does the artwork use sound?
Ambient sound.

Support and other structures:
The work includes all the necessary structures.

Please state which structures, hardware or other equipment is needed from the client:
UV-lights and assembling and a basket crane etc. lift if higher that 2 meters.

Minimum height of the space:
1,5 m

Minimum square meters of the space:
3 m2

Requirements for the space: darkness, temperature, colouring (light / dark / specific colour / other) etc.:
The installation have to be done on the inside of glass, the markers used are not weather proof. The UV-lights can be installed inside or outside the window based on the site specifications. The interior space behind the window should be dark or lowlit with blue lights etc. If the window is very high, there should be room to operate a lift in front of it for the drawing.

Building time and people required (estimate):
For a 14 m x 7 m window it takes around 5 days to draw the installation, one working day covers approximately 3 m x 3 m.

Artist's presence:
Artist or their representative must be present during building.
