Janne Parviainen: Light painting

Selection of light paintings from Janne Parviainen.

My light paintings have been done by carefully tracing surface areas inch by inch with a single LED light while the camera captures with long exposure. The finished photo is a topographic study of the areas traced with light in an otherwise completely dark space. I like to implement the stories the spaces already have by using models who are lying on the floor/ground etc. and tracing them with the light as well, so that it seems they are part of the surrounding space. In these images it is almost as if we can see behind our everyday surroundings and get a glimpse of another dimension where time stands still, and we are one with the universe. The idea that greatly inspires me in these light paintings is that the finished photo is sort of a map of time gone by where we can see the pattern of how I have moved during the exposure time.

The exposure times in the images vary from ten minutes to hours, depending on the amount I have traced with the LED light. All the light effects in the photos are created manually during the exposure and there is no post processing of any kind used in them (except the Dragonfly image which has been mirrored into four segments). The light paintings can be displayed as a print exhibition, on light boxes, on monitors/screens or projected on buildings etc.
