Isabella Chydenius: #pinkcitylightproject

#pinkcitylightproject is a streetlight-intervention project in cityscapes.

This piece is a continuation of my project #pinkcitylightproject which takes place in cityscapes that I move or travel to. In the project I find suitable streetlight that I can climb onto with a ladder or crane and attach a pink colour film gel around the lamp. In this way, the light of the lamp and the surrounding area turns into a strong pink colour. The project often needs a permission from the city council. The attachment process does not harm the pole, lamp, or the surrounding environment. It’s attached with tape, which is easy to remove from all kinds of surfaces such as glass, metal, and plastic. I always make sure that I attach the tape and colour film so that it won’t come off until I come back to remove it. In this way, no refuse is left at the location. I use a colour that I’ve titled Club Pink. In my work, I’ve found how neon pink is experienced as a strong and joyful colour, especially when expressed through the medium of light. It often captures the attention of passersby. It’s contrasting to the otherwise monotone colour scale of cityscapes, therefore, creating a momentary escape from everyday reality in a surreal dreamlike manner. In this way, the piece invites passersby for a momentary space for reflection through playful joy in the everyday landscape.
