Kirsti Taiviola: Flying Bird With Seven Lenses

A work made with a unique technique: a stop-motion animation with hand blown glass lenses.

Flying Bird with Seven Lenses is a reflection on invisible substances. With our eyes, we can detect the existence of air by observing the movement around us; shaking leaves or dust flying in the wind. By looking at a flying bird we can understand that the air carries it, but the air itself remains invisible.

A lens device playing with the optics of hand-blown glass creates a stop-motion animation of a flying bird as a projection of light. The work is a bow to analogue technology and lens making.
